KARGIL VIJAY DIWAS

    KARGIL VICTORY DAY

Kargil Vijay Diwas, celebrated on July 26th, commemorates India's victory over Pakistan in the 1999 Kargil War. Pakistani forces had covertly occupied strategic positions in the Northern Kargil District of Ladakh. Initially, Pakistan denied its army's involvement, attributing the conflict to Kashmiri militants. However, evidence such as documents from casualties, testimony from POWs, and statements from Pakistani officials, including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Army Chief Pervez Musharraf, confirmed the Pakistani military's participation. Every year, the Prime Minister pays homage to the fallen soldiers at Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate in New Delhi, and various functions are organized nationwide to honor their contributions.

The conflict emerged despite the Lahore Declaration signed in February 1999, which aimed for a peaceful resolution to the Kashmir issue. During the winter of 1998-1999, Pakistani forces infiltrated Indian territory under "Operation Badri" to sever the link between Kashmir and Ladakh and force India into negotiations. Initially mistaken for militants, the infiltrators' sophisticated tactics revealed a larger scale operation, with an area of 130-200 km² seized. India responded with Operation Vijay, mobilizing 200,000 troops. The war officially ended on July 26, 1999, with the eviction of Pakistani forces, marking the day as Kargil Vijay Diwas, but at the cost of 527 Indian soldiers' lives.

On July 26th, our school commemorated Kargil Vijay Diwas with a moving student skit. This day honors India’s victory in the 1999 Kargil War, with special focus on Captain Vikram Batra, whose bravery was crucial in recapturing key positions. The skit vividly depicted the infiltration by Pakistani forces, the intense battles, and Captain Batra’s heroic role, including his famous line, “Yeh Dil Maange More.” The performance concluded with a tribute to the fallen soldiers, emphasizing their courage and sacrifice. Our students’ heartfelt portrayal was a powerful reminder of the enduring spirit of our nation. Jai Hind!
